What this site knows about you

Last reviewed 14 October 2026

Almost nothing, and nothing at all until you say yes. There is no form on this site, no sign-up, no account and no newsletter, so there is nothing for you to hand over by accident.

The one cookie

If you choose Allow on the bar at the foot of the page, Google Analytics sets a cookie that counts you as one visitor rather than several, and records which pages you read, roughly where in the world you are, what kind of device and browser you used, which site you arrived from, and which outbound links you clicked. It is used to see whether anyone is reading, and for nothing else.

If you choose Decline, or simply ignore the bar, that cookie is never set. The tag starts in a denied state before it loads, so this is not a promise about what happens afterwards — nothing is stored on your device unless you accept.

There is no advertising here, no retargeting, no social media pixel, no embedded video, and no fonts, scripts or images loaded from anyone else’s server. Your reading is not sold or shared with anybody.

Changing your mind

Either way, you can change the answer whenever you like:

Clearing this site’s data in your browser has the same effect, and removes the cookie as well.

The server

This site is hosted by Netlify, and like every web server theirs keeps a short-lived log of requests — the address that asked for a page, when, and what was returned. That happens whatever you choose on the bar, because it is how a file gets to you at all. It is not linked to anything else and the author does not read it as a record of people.

Downloading the audio

The audio files are served from this site. Downloading one is an ordinary request, logged as above and nothing more. You do not identify yourself to get it.

Leaving this site

Buying a book sends you to the shop, which is somebody else’s site running under their own privacy policy. No payment is ever taken here, and no card or address details reach this site or its author.

Email

If you write to books@caelwaring.com, your message and address sit in a mailbox so that it can be answered. If you ask to hear when Volume III lands, your address is kept for that one email and is not added to any list, because there is no list. Ask for it to be deleted and it will be, the same day.

Your rights

This site is run from Alberta. The province’s Personal Information Protection Act covers it, and the federal PIPEDA covers anything crossing a provincial or national border — which, for a site hosted outside Canada, is most of it. Under either you may ask what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or withdraw your consent at any time — the button above does the last of those in one click.

Write to books@caelwaring.com for the rest. If the answer does not satisfy you, you can complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, or to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

If you are reading this in the UK or the EU, the UK GDPR and the GDPR give you those rights and several more, and the cookie bar above is built to meet them. The address is the same either way, and it reaches a person.

Changes

If this changes, the date at the top changes with it. The site is too small for version history, so that date is the whole record.
